Documents you need for the Patente B in Italy: the full checklist
Last updated: · ✓ Checked against its sources
Every figure on this page was checked directly against the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) and the Portale dell’Automobilista. Last verified: 13 August 2026. Official sources are linked at the bottom.
Missing one document can cost you the whole day. The Motorizzazione or your autoscuola will just turn you away, and then you’re back at the end of the queue. So check everything against this list before you go.
What you need to apply
1. Form TT 2112
This is the actual application form. You can get it at the Motorizzazione office or download it online. If you’re going through an autoscuola, they’ll usually fill it in for you.
2. Valid ID, plus a photocopy
Passport or Italian ID card (carta d’identità). Bring both the original and a photocopy.
3. Medical certificate (certificato di idoneità psicofisica)
You get this from an authorised doctor. Pay attention to how long it stays valid:
| Issued by | Valid for |
|---|---|
| A single authorised doctor | 3 months |
| A medical commission | 6 months |
⚠️ A common mistake: people get the medical certificate first, then spend weeks chasing the other documents, and by the time they’re ready the certificate has expired — meaning a new appointment, a new fee, the whole thing again. Get the medical last, once everything else is already in hand.
4. Codice fiscale, plus a photocopy
5. pagoPA payment receipts
For the theory exam:
| Item | Cost | Code |
|---|---|---|
| diritti | €26,40 | N067 |
| bolli | €16,00 | N067 |
For the practical exam booking, separately:
| Item | Cost | Code |
|---|---|---|
| bolli | €16,00 | N019 |
All payments go through the pagoPA system. Keep copies of every receipt.
6. Permesso di soggiorno (for non-EU applicants)
Either a valid permesso di soggiorno, or the receipt for a first-time application or renewal.
The receipt is enough — this is where a lot of people worry unnecessarily. Waiting on a renewal doesn’t mean you can’t apply.
What to bring on exam day
This is where most mistakes happen. In the Ministry’s own words:
“Gli stessi documenti devono essere esibiti in occasione dell’esame di teoria e di guida”
The same documents have to be shown again on both exam days — theory and practical.
Handing everything in when you apply isn’t the end of it. Show up empty-handed on the exam day and you won’t be allowed to sit it.
Pack in your bag:
- ID (original)
- Permesso di soggiorno or the receipt (original)
- Codice fiscale
- pagoPA receipts
Before the practical exam
An autoscuola certificate — at least 6 hours
Before the practical, you need a certificate from an autoscuola confirming you’ve done at least 6 hours of instruction, including motorway and night driving.
This 6-hour requirement is mandatory even if you’re studying da privatista (on your own) — there’s no way around it.
The exam vehicle
“Veicolo della categoria B capace di sviluppare almeno 100 km/h e dotato di doppi comandi”
A category B vehicle capable of at least 100 km/h, fitted with dual controls (doppi comandi). If you’re testing through an autoscuola, they provide the car.
A few practical tips
These are not official rules, but they help:
- Photocopy everything twice, in advance. Hunting for a copy shop after you’ve already queued means losing your place.
- Keep everything in one folder, not scattered across pockets.
- Check that your name is spelled the same everywhere. Passport, permesso and codice fiscale need to match, and transliterating a Bangla name into Italian spelling is exactly where this goes wrong. Fix any mismatch before you go, not after.
- Call ahead to check what each office handles on which day — every Motorizzazione runs slightly differently.
If anything here changes
Rules like these do get updated. I check them against official sources every six months and note the date. But if you turn up and something here doesn’t match what you’re told — tell me. I’ll fix it, and it’ll save the next person the same trouble.
