What happens if you fail — retake rules and waiting times

Failing is not unusual and it is not something to be embarrassed about — the exam is not in your own language, and plenty of people do not pass first time. But not knowing the rules wastes both time and money, so here is exactly what happens, when you can try again, and what to do when the attempts run out.
If you fail the theory exam
You get 2 attempts within 6 months, counted from the date you submit your application (domanda).
⚠️ The part many people do not know: you cannot sit the second attempt immediately. By law, at least 1 month must pass between a failed exam and the next one — and this applies to both exams, theory and practical.
If you fail both attempts
If you do not pass within those two attempts, that application’s six-month window is finished, and you start the whole process again — new application, new medical certificate, new fees, and the theory exam from scratch.
That is why preparing properly for the first attempt is the cheap option.
If you fail the practical exam
The foglio rosa you receive after passing the theory is valid for 12 months, and within it you may sit the practical exam up to 3 times.
⚠️ Three things to keep in mind:
- The practical exam can only be taken at least 1 month after the foglio rosa is issued — not before.
- The same 1-month gap is compulsory between each failed attempt and the next.
- So if you fail the first attempt, the second is at least a month away. Plan for that time and keep practising through it.
If you fail three times, or the foglio rosa expires
There is an exception here called riporto dell’esame di teoria — in some cases a passed theory result can be carried over onto a new foglio rosa without sitting the written exam again.
But this exception is not for everyone. The ministerial circular frames it as relief for candidates delayed by the motorizzazione’s own scheduling — for example when the office could not give you an exam date in time. Running out of time for your own reasons does not bring it into play automatically.
Where riporto does not apply, you go back to the start: theory exam again, new medical certificate, new fees.
Detail: What is the foglio rosa?
In short
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| Next attempt after failing the theory | at least 1 month later |
| Total theory attempts | 2, within 6 months of applying |
| Both theory attempts failed | start again from a new application |
| Next attempt after failing the practical | at least 1 month later |
| Total practical attempts | 3, within the foglio rosa’s 12 months |
| Three failures, or the foglio rosa expires | normally the theory again — riporto is the only exception, and only on its own conditions |
Why this matters
People often assume they can rebook straight away, plan around that, and then find the rule in the way. Building the compulsory month into your plan from the start makes the whole thing easier to schedule and avoids a nasty surprise.
